Money Julie Brigidi
It is only as important as we make it. Because it is a falsely created reality it is at once desirable and illusive. Also, it has been proven again and again that money in and of itself never makes you happy.Think about the very wealthy people you know well… if they are happy, chances are it is not from their monetary wealth, but more often than not because of their family or what they do with their lives. Now consider some people that you know ho are not wealthy but ever so happy. Think of that elderly man at the YMCA who is always happy and smiling and lives in a trailer with his wife and two cats. Need I say more? Now, about this unreal quality of money… Let me give you an example. My husband and I bought our home seventeen years ago. We had somehow managed to put together enough for a down payment on our one hundred and thirty thousand dollar home. Honestly, I do not know how we did it! In retrospect it seems as though we lived on air. Oh, we taught and bartended and waited tables and sometimes sold our photos, but we were so poor that I remember going to the market and not being able to buy a special jar of jam because I didn’t have the money. Enough said! Now, time travel to now, and consider this thought; our same little house is on the market for half a million dollars! I have never seen this huge sum of money, and my house hasn’t changed considerably in the seventeen years that we have owned it yet it is worth a half a million dollars because our society has arbitrarily set the cost of homes and buildings at absurdly high prices. I will sell this house and never see or touch any of the money that is paid me for it. My mortgage will be paid off to the bank, and the rest of the money will be paid to another bank as a down payment for my new home. Is that money tangible? No. The homes are, but are they truly worth five times more than they were 17 years ago? I think not. Our society has invented these values. It is confounding and certainly explainable in economic terms, but still unreal. And so we stress over money, rejoice over money, sink into the mire of depression over money, and argue relentlessly about money. It is at once terrific, terrifying and a figment of the cosmic imagination. Most importantly, feelings about or caused by money are always intense - resentment, joy, sorrow, anger… but the most intense of all feelings, love is never born of money. Never! << Previous Page |

"Hannah Goodman has written a wonderfully witty, engrossing and hilarious novel about sisters and their relationships. Her prose is dead on and her scenes flow effortlessly from one to the other. I can't remember the last time I stayed up to finish a book, but I had to finish My Sister’s Wedding!" Rosemary O’Brien, Author of First Saturday

In the 2005 fall issue of East Bay Living, syndicated columnist cited several famous authors like Grisham and Patricia Cornwell as her favorite authors. She also added, "I also like local authors. There's a young adult book (My Sister's Wedding) by Hannah Goodman, a teacher who lives in Bristol (RI). It has great dialogue."
