If you are brave enough to enter my classroom, whether I am teaching adults or teenagers, you must be willing to stretch your imagination and drop all preconceived notions of a “writing class”. Students must be willing to teeter on the edge of a cliff, teeter to the point of being scared at times and also exhilarated at the prospect of jumping freely and, perhaps, flying off the cliff rather than plummet to their end–remember, I said you have to stretch your imagination. I teach rather radical methods of accessing the writer’s “voice” as well as model some untraditional ways to tackle “story-telling”. But, as you will read in the testimonials, my methods work. However, they will not work if the student will not work; buy into my approach, and jump in with both feet.

The point of my homework assignments is to get you to write. That’s it. I create assignments that will grab your attention. For example, one popular assignment is to write about food in your “groin” voice or from the “groin” (You really do need to come to class to fully understand that I really and truly do not mean literally write from your groin...purely metaphor here!). Writing from the “groin” means to write in sensual, seductive, sexy voice–picture your writer’s voice wearing satin underwear, if you would. Writing from the groin is both terrifying and exciting–kind of like your first kiss. Another assignment is to “write through the tight spots”. This powerful approach to releasing mental and physical pain involves writing about the sensations you feel in your body. I guide students through a brief relaxation/meditation exercise and then have them write. Undoubtedly, the writing that comes out is not always about the physical pain the student feels but about other pain as well.

So, take a look at student work and class testimonials and see if Releasing The Writer Within™ is for you!

"Hannah Goodman has written a wonderfully witty, engrossing and hilarious novel about sisters and their relationships. Her prose is dead on and her scenes flow effortlessly from one to the other. I can't remember the last time I stayed up to finish a book, but I had to finish My Sister’s Wedding!"
Rosemary O’Brien, Author of First Saturday

In the 2005 fall issue of East Bay Living, syndicated columnist cited several famous authors like Grisham and Patricia Cornwell as her favorite authors.  She also added, "I also like local authors.  There's a young adult book (My Sister's Wedding) by Hannah Goodman, a teacher who lives in Bristol (RI). It has great dialogue."
