More From The In Box

Hi, Hannah,

I am one of the group at United Congregational Church who will be meeting with you tomorrow evening (Tuesday) in conjunction with our book group.

I just wanted to say, in advance, that my wife and I thoroughly enjoyed your book, and we are looking forward eagerly to meeting you.

I thought at first that it was just going to be a cute kid's book for young teenagers. (We have a 13 year old granddaughter.)

Then I discovered that you recognized the real problems kids face today with alcohol, drugs, sex, relationship and families -- and that you were able to relate to their age group in their own language.

You must be a fantastic teacher. I wonder what grades you teach.

You also included, without preaching, accurate and useful information about alcoholism, and how to (and how not to) handle it within one's family and one's relationships.

My favorite all-time author is Herman Wouk, and your book reminded me of his "Marjorie Morningstar" -- only yours packed all that stuff into a small book (which neither my wife nor I could put down until we were done).

I was also reminded of the movie "28 days" with Sandra Bullock.

I really appreciated your turning the parents, especially the Mom, into people-who also-just-need-to-be-understood -- characters deserving our sympathy.

Thank you for providing such a rich, informative, entertainment!

hi my name is Dale i am in the class that you are suppose to be in on Friday at Kickemuit and i have a question for you, is your work inspired by the writer S.E. Hinton? Because our teacher read us your story "the day after the roses" and it sounds very similar to S.E. Hintons Work.

Hi Hannah,

I just read My Sister's Wedding and loved it! The characters are great, it's informative, it's funny, it's got a good plot...
I like the special relationship Maddie has with her father--something Barbara didn't have and probably would have benefited from. I like how they go to the city on Saturdays. (FYI:  New Yorkers wouldn't say "west
entrance to Central Park"--they'd say "one of the west entrances" or more likely "the West 72nd Street entrance" or "West 86th Street entrance"). I loved the oak tree and found myself wishing that Maddie would eventually climb it and curl up in it for old times sake for a
cozy nap. The many times you have Maddie crying and angry and sad really made it clear that it takes a long time to heal and you just have to go through it. All the stuff about drinking is SO important for YA readers to read--and I could totally see a big publisher taking this. (Why didn't they?) Though Maddie's physical description is different than your own, I kept picturing her as you. She is so real.  She made me think about the relationship I have with my younger sister and how my sister might sometimes feel with me married with a kid and often being too busy for her. I hope Barbara sticks to AA. I hope Maddie goes out with Sean--or at least someone like him. I how you showed Maddie getting along with those two literary magazine girls and meeting Sean without continuing on "the obvious route": having Maddie suddenly have a new boyfriend and a new group of friends. I like the subtleness of your showing that she has potential for new people though she' s not ready yet. Your choices made the story seem so much more real. --Wendy Wax

Hello Hannah,
I had ordered your book which I received along with a nice personal note and want to say I finished the book last night.  It was warmly written from the point of the 15 yr old and you kept the reader planted in that voice.  The theme was woven through and through and well stated without being offensive.

I am looking forward to reading the other "Maddie" books and sharing this book with my Writer's group.

Thank you so much!

Hi! I wanted to thank you for writing books for teenagers.  My daughter (Madeline Hickman, age 15) came upon your book and thought it was an interesting coincidence – her older sister is also getting married next year!  I am anxious to read your book and hope our real lives are not as closely related to your character’s lives!

Hi Hannah,
I just read 'My Sister's Wedding’. I loved it and found your writing style humorous and thought provoking. I felt as if I was inside Maddie's head and felt her thoughts as if they were my own. I look forward to reading more of your work. Thank you. Sincerely, Linda

Hey Hannah,

I finally read your awesome book and enjoyed every minute.  I loved all the traditional Jewish details that you included.  It is an insightful book and I can't wait to read more about Maddie's life.

My first picture book is finally in print, Horray!  I am working on my website and it should be up and running in about 3 weeks.  www.gigimoralesdavid.com

I will send you a copy of my book.

---------------------------------

Hello, I was so excited when I found out that your book was published. I remember you had brought in a copy for the class to read. I went to Barns & Nobles today and picked up a copy. I have really enjoyed it and am almost finished. I hope that someday I will get a book or two published. Well, got to go… Jennifer Whalen

Hi!

This is Kristine Sanchez. You had me two years ago when I was a sophomore in English 10. I just wanted to tell you I spent my snow day in this morning reading your book. I thought it was great! I loved all the little references in it that pertained to living in Middletown [i.e. Temple Shalom] and everything. You made Maddie such a complex character, and I kept turning pages to find out what's happening with her. You've pretty much hit on high school life pretty well with your book, and I liked how you talked about sex and alcohol in your
novel. I can't wait for your sequels about Maddie, maybe they'll give more hints to Sean. Haha! Hope you're doing well!

Hannah,
Hi I'm from JACS in NYC and you were so kind to send me a copy of your book a while back.  I just had the opportunity to start reading it today and I can't put it down. As a sober person in recovery for many years, I so identify with it.  I want to pass it on to the teen coordinator at JACS, since I think it might be something she could pass along to other young people.  We do a lot of outreach in the Jewish community and I think your book is such a great vehicle for people to gain an insight into the dysfunctional life of alcoholism.

---------------------------------

Hey, Hannah!  I just finished the book and thought that it was great.  You are such a good writer.  I am going to be coming to the book signing on the 30th so that I can get you to autograph it for me.  Great job!
Kim Maratto

 Hannah,
I did read your book and really enjoyed it, particularly where I come from a back ground of alcoholism. A review of it is on my list of to do's.  We don't do subscriptions unless someone is out of state, but the web site has listings of where we are available.
Nancy

Had to tell you how much I loved “My Sister’s Wedding”.  Have passed it along to a couple of friends and the reaction is the same.  I read that you had published a couple of other books about Maddie … what were their titles and are they available, and where?

Look forward to hearing from you.

Hi Mrs. Goodman-
This is Jessie Grimmitt, I'm not sure if you remember me, I was one of Dani Silvia's friends. I never had you as a teacher, this year was my first year at MHS so I won't be offended if you aren't sure of who I am. Anywho I got my paws on a copy of your book and read it. I wanted to tell you that I really enjoyed it. I liked the way the subject of alcoholism (forgive me for my spelling) was presented in it, I loved the Martha Stewart character, there are people like that in my life so I was totally able to picture Maddie's mother. It was great! I could go on and on about the things you wrote in the book but I'm sure you don't have time for that, I just wanted to tell you that I liked it; and I hope you write more books. I hope you are enjoying your summer and that the baby is well.

Hi Hannah,

Well, I just finished "My Sister's Wedding" and all I can say is -- thank God I grew up a teenage boy in a stable home!  I feel you did a great job telling Maddie's story, and brought all the characters to light.  I usually don't read this sort of material -- I'm a sci-fi, fantasy, thriller kind of reader -- but I really enjoyed your book.  So, when is the sequel?  :) Mike

---------------------------------

Hi Hannah,

I think that is so great that you wrote and published a book!!  How exciting and fun!!

I thought it was great and you did a really good job creating a character that you could continue on with.  You also did a great job with creating a relatable (if that's a word) character that has a good head on her shoulders - I also liked a lot of your similes and metaphors (if that is the right term - it's been a while since I've taken English and since I have even thought of those words;) ) I loved Sean too - what a sweetie!!

I really like it and am so happy for you!!

Dear Hannah Goodman,
My name is Laura Fischer. I am fourteen years old and I have recently  read your novel, "My Sister's Wedding."  I thought it was excellent.  I found that as a teen, I could definitely relate to the story, and the characters. The story was very interesting, and it included many classic problems that people my age face.  I look forward to reading your next novels.
            Sincerely,
            Laura Fischer

"This was just one of those books that left me thinking 'Wow.' -- The idea of knowing the one who was responsible for this piece was exhilarating." Nick Jesse

"My Sister's Wedding" captures the underestimated hardships of being a teenager while emphasizing the importance of the family unit.  The reader is led through building excitement to a climatic ending.  The author has undoubtedly used knowledge of a countless number of different personality types and family backgrounds to prepare this short yet so informing gem.

Hi Hannah,

Your book was excellent. I actually tried to put it down three times. I started it around 10 pm and went to bed around 1:30 with it finished. I can honestly say I was sad when the story end! I wanted it to continue.  As for the promotion It's my personal feeling that everyone in our group should buy your book! It was excellent. As I told Mike when the next one comes out I want another book signed saying "to my biggest fan with Love XOXOXOXO"!!

The storyline was excellent along with the character development. I thought Maddie was classic with her teen melodrama. Very realistic.

It was a good read.

Thanks,

Bret

 Hannah,
I really enjoyed your book.  It has sucked me in to find out what happens next.  Will she end up with Justin or the sensitive and understanding Sean?  When will the two books be available?-S

"Hannah Goodman has written a wonderfully witty, engrossing and hilarious novel about sisters and their relationships. Her prose is dead on and her scenes flow effortlessly from one to the other. I can't remember the last time I stayed up to finish a book, but I had to finish My Sister’s Wedding!"
Rosemary O’Brien, Author of First Saturday

It has great dialogue."
