Ernie is the oldest cousin on my father’s side of the family.  His wife Roberta and I share a love of cooking and wine.  Ernie is a retired librarian and Roberta is a retired school teacher (and grateful to be retired I might add!).  When Ernie first retired he organized and catalogued Roberta’s vast collection of cooking magazines and recipes.  Ernie says, “After only a few weeks of retirement Roberta started looking in the newspaper for part-time librarian jobs so she could get me out of the house.”  Ernie is now semi-retired and working at libraries in Newton and Wellesley.  Roberta says Ernie went back to work so she can go on more trips, lunches, dinners, and theater events with the girls!

On this particular evening I am traveling into Boston’s North End with Ernie and Roberta to enjoy a special price fixed dinner during Winter Restaurant Week.  Ernie and Roberta have just returned from visiting relatives in Florida.  As I sit in the back seat, listening and observing, they are bantering back and forth over all the stories they want to share with me.  When Ernie gets excited his voice gets louder and then Roberta’s voice gets louder so that she can talk over him.  Roberta has a slight hearing loss so she doesn’t mind that Ernie talks loudly.  Ernie says Roberta talks louder than she used to only so that she can hear what she is saying!

Ernie begins to tell me the story of a restaurant experience they had in Florida with my aunt and uncles.  He says, “You wouldn’t have gone into the restaurant and, if you did, you would have been grossed out by the vast portions of food people were putting away!”  Roberta interjects, “Tell her about the apple pie that George and Tommy ordered.”  Ernie says, “Roberta, let me finish.  I haven’t gotten to that part yet.”  “Well,” says Roberta, “I didn’t want you to forget.”  I can tell Ernie is rolling his eyes at his bride of 41 years even though I cannot see them.  Ernie proceeds to tell me about the restaurant and, eventually, the pie.

As Ernie talks about the different landscapes in Florida and what he liked and didn’t like about them, Roberta interrupts.  “Oh, and you should see Priscilla’s house!”  Ernie says, “Will you let me finish telling her about Lakeland first?”  “I thought you were done,” quips Roberta.  Now they are both talking and gesturing at once.  First about Priscilla’s house and then onto Roberta’s cousin who collects Japanese art.

When we finally arrive in the North End Ernie is elated to find a parking space not far from the restaurant.  Roberta says, “Well, Ern, your night is made.  You found a great parking space.”  She looks at me and continues, “Whenever Ernie tells people about this restaurant we went to with you he’ll say, ‘and the best part was finding a parking space only a block from the restaurant!’ ”

On our way to Terramia, our restaurant destination, Ernie digresses and points us in another direction.  As we approach Mike’s Pastry he points to a parking space and proudly declares, “When Roberta’s friends were visiting we brought them in here on a busy Labor Day weekend and I parked right there!!”   I’ll bet Ernie doesn’t remember the name of the restaurant they dined at that night or what he had for dinner, but he couldn’t forget that parking space he was lucky enough to secure!

"Hannah Goodman has written a wonderfully witty, engrossing and hilarious novel about sisters and their relationships. Her prose is dead on and her scenes flow effortlessly from one to the other. I can't remember the last time I stayed up to finish a book, but I had to finish My Sister’s Wedding!"
Rosemary O’Brien, Author of First Saturday

In the 2005 fall issue of East Bay Living, syndicated columnist cited several famous authors like Grisham and Patricia Cornwell as her favorite authors.  She also added, "I also like local authors.  There's a young adult book (My Sister's Wedding) by Hannah Goodman, a teacher who lives in Bristol (RI). It has great dialogue."
