Special One Night/Afternoon Intensives

An Evening of Writing

Inspire your inner writer in this one-night workshop. Hannah will guide you through a series of exercises designed to release your creative energy so that you write with ease and inspiration. Don't worry about grammar, spelling, or sentence structure. Leave your inner critic behind. By the end of the evening, you will have the tools to effortlessly produce lots of creative writing. All levels welcome.

Breaking Through The Block

Does the phrase "writer's block" describe your current writing life? Whether you have been blocked just a few weeks or years, this workshop shows you practical techniques that will not only help you knock down that proverbial wall, but will also help you continue to write forever. Writer's need only a pen, a notebook, and an open mind.

How To Finish What You've Started

The title of this workshop says it all. Hannah will provide you the tools to help you change your perspective on your procrastination, enabling you to go ahead and finish that novel, short story, or memoir that's collecting dust on your proverbial (or literal) shelf. Students must bring their work-in-progress to this class, even if students only have a few pages or an outline. By the end of four hours, you will be able to finish what you started!

Using Your Own Life To Create Powerful Fiction

Have you ever said, "Man, my life is stranger than fiction!" Or, "No one would believe this! I have got to write  a book!"  Maybe you want to write it down but are afraid of what the people in your life might think. One way to get around that is to take your real life and use the interesting parts in your fiction or use your emotional truths to create extraordinary compelling stories. Learn the difference between factual and emotional truth, how to tap into discovering your emotional truth and use it to write unique and better-than-fiction stories.

The Basics of Storytelling

Even if you have written a rough draft, everyone needs to understand the different parts of a story. The basics of plot, characterization, point-of-view, and theme will be covered as well as the variety of writing techniques writers can use to create effective and emotionally evocative stories.

How to Read like a Writer (and use what you learn in your work)

This is a crash course in the connection between literary analysis and writing. In this class students will learn how to analyze passages of a variety of genres  of fiction–deconstruct the writing of both good and bad writers. Then, students will discover/uncover how these writers succeeded or failed in their attempts to create great work. Once students understand how good writing is created, they will practice the techniques they uncovered on their own work.

These classes run weekly, "live" or online.

Journal Writing

Remember your old diary from sixth grade, the one place where you let yourself pour your heart and soul out? Do you find yourself longing for that same inner sense of freedom you had as a child? What you need to do is journal. As adults, that is a chore but as a child, it was bliss. In this two hour workshop, you will recapture that same freedom of expression you had as a kid, pushing past the inner-censor and releasing everything on to paper. Then, you will learn how to take this process into your writing projects so that they become effortless and fun.

Discover Your Writer's Voice

Are you having trouble completing writing projects or facing a bad case of writer’s block? What you need is to find your writer’s voice, the natural voice within.  In this workshop you will learn several techniques that will jump-start your writing and help you complete projects.

Storytelling Techniques

Using the journal as a writer's tool, Hannah helps students identify the stories they wish to write–from their own lives, from their dreams, or from their imaginations. Whether it is fact or fiction, whether it is a memoir piece or fantasy, in this workshop students will walk away with the ability to tell a story–beginning, middle, and end. Stories will be effortless to write and ideas flowing.

Critique and Feedback is a special class for those of you who want to focus on a specific piece that needs to be polished.  Students will choose one piece that they feel needs work and bring this to each class where both students and teacher (me) will critique it.  My critique will be both verbal and written– a service that freelance editors charge a whole lot for!  The only thing you need to do is bring enough copies of the piece to class and also, and more importantly, be receptive to the critique and feedback.    This is not the same as a writing group or a critique group.  This a structured class with one person (me) guiding the group in appropriate ways to give and receive criticism.

Weekend Workshop

This weekend workshop is two days of  learning and practicing powerful writing techniques from the Releasing The Writer Within program.  Students will walk away with a grab bag of tools to use at home for all of your writing, whether it's fiction, memoir, or journaling.

Write a Short Story

If you have trouble setting deadlines and finishing stories, this is the class for you. In this workshop, Hannah teaches you about the different elements of narrative and demonstrates how to take those elements and create a cohesive short story. By the end of this workshop, you will have the rough draft of a short story!

Write A Novel in Twelve Weeks

If you have always wanted to write a novel and are willing to dedicate every spare moment for three months to writing every single day, then this is the class for you. An open mind and lots of ideas help too. By the end of this workshop, you will have the first draft for a novel!

The Master Class

Journaling and storytelling in one class! You will learn how to:
• Combat writer’s block
• Journal freely
• Compose fiction and creative non-fiction
• Edit and revise your work
• Break into the world of publishing

Plot Workshop

You’re knee-deep into a writing project and then suddenly, you stop, look around, and realize you have no idea where you are or where you’re going. You feel lost, powerless, and alone– like driving in Boston without a map.  In this workshop you will practice a technique that helps you organize and map out the structure of your story. After all, without a map, we sometimes get lost.  Now, you will create that map and never get lost again.

Character Workshop

So you’ve written a short story, novel, or memoir, and the characters are boring or flat.  You want them to be three-dimensional and real but don’t know how to do it.  In this workshop learn a powerful technique for creating or enhancing characters and learn how to write authentic dialogue.  Lift flat characters from the page and make them dance!

Writing & Literature

This class teaches students how to analyze and study classic and contemporary literature as a means to learning writing techniques that can be applied to their own writing. Students will have a required reading list that should be completed before the workshop.
